A defected Eastern bloc scientist has been sent into a coma by a blood clot in his brain. In order to save him and the knowledge that only he has, a team of five (two doctors, a female assistant, a security officer/frogman, and the inventor/pilot of the sub) agree to be miniaturized along with an experimental nuclear-powered submarine and injected into the scientist's body in order to find the clot and dissolve it with a laser. There are several complications: Miniaturization wears off quickly after 60 minutes, and a member of the team may be a saboteur. This 1966 movie bridges the gap between cheesey 1950s scifi and the sophisticated Star Wars and Star Trek films to follow. Visual effects are decent (the film won Oscars for this and for art direction), and despite plenty of technical and physiological implausibilities, the script and acting are admirably low key, with a minimum of cheap histrionics.
