an American ambulance driver who's volunteered for duty with the Italian army (before the Americans got into the war). Wounded at the front, he is assigned to a hospital for recovery and here he meets Catherine, a young British nurse (Jennifer Jones). It is no surprise that they find themselves falling in love--certainly a love that was not to be. Henry deserts and they flee to Switzerland, hoping to find and enjoy love, peace, and happiness ever after. This is not to be, as the movie continues to slide in to tragic consequences. Catherine becomes “with child” and dies in childbirth. Fate has certainly taken over
center stage here. Filmed on location, the movie does a good job in reflecting the Hemingway Code. A tear-jerker, nonetheless, worth the effort.
