Stacy Keach is 30 years old and has retired from boxing 18 months before. Since then, he works as a day labourer in the fields near Stockton by day and spends his money on booze at night. He crosses the path of Jeff Bridges, a young boxer, who's a natural. Keach sends Bridges to his former trainer and loves Tyrrell, an alcoholic woman. Keach decides to make a boxing comeback.
