A lonely middle-aged catering manager named Hilditch (Hoskins) has two hobbies: making clandestine videotapes of women hitchhikers and reliving his childhood each evening through cooking along to tapes of his mother's (Khanjian) 1950s television program. He crosses paths with Felicia, a young Irish woman (Cassidy) trying to find her boyfriend in Manchester. It's a very different environment from the small hometown she knows. Her only way of finding the boy who's left her pregnant is to find the lawnmower factory where he is supposedly working. Hilditch spies the hapless, helpless young woman and slowly begins insinuating himself, making himself helpful. Or is he?
