This is the story of a couple, Tom and Violet who are planning to get married but end up postponing their wedding for five years due to several unfolding events. Tom Solomon is a Chef and is planning to marry his fiancee but they are faced by obstacles which end up separating them for five years. Violet is admitted to a post doctorate program in Michigan while Tom gets a promotion in his current job at San Francisco and they are forced to delay their wedding for two years. Tom however declines his promotion and moves to Michigan but he is unable to secure a job there as a chef. Violet's supervisor Winton develops feelings towards her and even extends her contract a year further. After an incident at a bar where Violet ends up kissing Winton, she is disillusioned and suggests to Tom that they need to get married soon, an idea which Tom agrees to. At their rehearsal dinner, Winton confesses about the kissing and the drama that follows leads to a cancellation of their engagement. Tom ends up sleeping with one of his colleagues though it is out of drunkenness, after which he decides to return to San Francisco to work at a friend's restaurant. While there, he meets Audrey and they start a relationship though it is evident that he is not satisfied. Meanwhile, Violet is dating Winton but breaks up with him as soon as she realizes he gave her a promotion based on their relationship rahter than her credentials.

Opinion about the main character:
There is no special characteristic in Tom that I can point out as likable or unlikable
Tom, a sous chef in San Francisco, and Violet, a student with a PhD in psychology, get engaged and are both as happy as can be. However, as the title indicates, they have to postpone their wedding when Tom's best friend impregnates Violet's sister, necessitating a speedy wedding that would preferably come before Tom and Violet's. They gladly agree, but further complications arise when Violet is accepted into a post-doctorate program in Michigan. It would last two years, but Tom, not wanting to impede her dreams, agrees to delay the wedding further and move with her to Michigan for two years. Resentment begins to gather early though, when Tom quits his job in San Francisco and he is informed he would've been the chef at a swanky new restaurant if he'd wanted the position. Violet thrives in her new atmosphere in Michigan, whereas Tom can't find a chef position and is forced to work at a shabby bagel place in the meantime. Violet's boss gets a huge grant, forcing Violet to stay to continue her research, sending Tom into further misery. After drunkenly kissing her boss one night, Violet confesses to Tom, and after an ill-advised attempt at a one-night stand, Tom decides to call off the engagement and move back to San Francisco. As all of Violet's older relatives begin dying, and Tom begins finding his footing in San Francisco once again by running a taco truck, it is up to Tom and Violet to figure out how they can, if possible, reconcile their relationship and finally get married.

It's a story about the hardships that come in a long-term relationship, and how to figure out dreams that will allow both parties' dreams to thrive. Anyone who's ever been in a long-term relationship will appreciate this movie.
Best scene in story:
Tom's new friend at the bagel store, played by Brian Posehn, is hilarious, and a hunting trip they take together made me laugh a lot.
Opinion about the main character:
Tom defers his dream for the woman he loves, which is an admirable trait if also foolhardy, since it stems his own resentment for her. Still, he means well, and Segel has great comedic timing.
