Four Days in September is based on actual events that took place in Rio and Sao Paolo, Brazil in the 1960's. It is based on the kidnapping of the American ambassador to Brazil by a radical faction intent on toppling Brazil's repressive military-led government and the re-institution of democratic ideals. The kidnappers of the ambassador are portrayed sympathetically, and they become close to him during the time of his confinement.
