Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Fun in Acapulco

American Mike Windgren works on a boat in Acapulco to clear his head after his part in a trapeze tragedy. When rejecting the boss's daughter gets him fired, he befriends an orphaned urchin named Rauol, whose hustling and connections land Mike jobs as a lifeguard and a singer. Facing the hotel pool's high diving board with his new fear of heights is just one of Mike's challenges.   His frictions with resident lifeguard and cliff diver Moreno, who resents losing hours to him, deepen when he feels sparks for the same girl – Maggie, the hotel's Assistant Social Director. Maggie is just as displeased with Mike's attentions to capricious bullfighter Dolores, whose ill-fated trip with him to a lovers' lane in a little red convertible does little to dampen his attraction.   When both women show up to see him sing at the Tropicana, and eye each other cattily, Mike deems it prudent to slip out a back window rather than face them. But crafty Rauol tricks Maggie into meeting Mike outside, thus fanning the flames of their romance.

Undaunted, Dolores relegates Maggie to the job of planning a party in her honor while she resumes flirting with Mike. Moreno researches Mike's past, taunts him about the tragedy, and openly ridicules his fear of heights. The flighty and shallow Dolores switches allegiance to Moreno. But Mike is also disenchanted with Maggie, having heard a rumor that she wants to marry him just to get into the United States. With his parents anxious to have him home, he decides there is something he must do before leaving Mexico. Summoning his courage, he faces the high board. He also confronts Maggie – who is unresponsive – then tells her father that she is a user, only to be informed how wrong he is. As he runs to look for her, he encounters Moreno. Their frictions culminate in a fistfight, incapacitating Moreno for a scheduled cliff dive. Mike is now faced with setting things right with both Moreno and Maggie.
