Bored by her life with her would be minister husband, Gertrud decides to leave him. She begins a love affair with the pianist Erland Jansson but the young man is afraid of Gertrud's ideas about love and prefers not to go on with this relationship. Gertrud's first love, the poet Gabriel Lidman, hasn't forgotten the young woman but is rejected by her. Gertrud's standards are too high because she gives herself up totally to love and expects the same from her partner.
