Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Gigi

This is the story of Gigi (Gilberte) an irrepressible young girl who lives with her Opera singing mother (who is too busy to pay any attention to Gigi) and her grandmother.

She goes to school and once a week, goes for "special lessons" at her Aunt Alicia, where she learns how to light a cigar, eat exotic food properly and basically learn how to become a mistress to a wealthy man (which is what the women in her family do).
The other main fixture in her life is Gaston, a very wealthy young man whose uncle was the lover of Gigi's grandmother many years before. He is a very cynical and jaded man. He isn't interested in anything anymore, everything has become "a bore."
When he goes over to see Gigi and her grandmother, he is charmed by Gigi....who is not impressed by his wealth and position in society. She makes him laugh with her nosy silly questions and very innocent ways. He helps the family out with food and even takes them on a holiday to the sea.
Gigi's grandmother and Aunt Alicia decide that Gaston is the perfect man for Gigi. Gaston offers to make Gigi his mistress. She doesn't really want to but goes along with it. On their first foray into Parisian society, everyone is curious about her. She does everything perfectly and is the perfect mistress.
But something isn't right for him and she knows it isn't right for her. She breaks down and tells him that she can't be his mistress, she wants everything to be like it was before, with him coming over to play cards with her and take her for rides in the park.
He tells her that it can't be like it was before because he has fallen in love with her and wants to marry her.
This movie is so sweet and charming. The songs - from "Thank Heaven for little girls" to "The night they invented champagne" to "I remember it well", it is a musical filled with good songs great dialogue and very funny situations.
A very funny take on the not-so-funny life of a cortesan in turn of the century Paris.
A delightful Cinderella story with a very happy ending.
