This glorious film tells the hitherto shamefully uncelebrated story of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first unit of black troops raised by the Union to fight in the Civil War.

This teriffic movie is a semi-fictionalized account of the 54th Mass. Inf. Regiment, the first regular Black Union regiment in the American Civil War. To me, this film is all about seeking and earning respect. The Colonel wants respect from his men. The Black soldiers want respect as men. The regiment wants respect from the army and the nation. The story is very well constructed, following the training and first campaigns leading up to the "gallant rush" at Fort Wagner in which this regiment earned respect and glory and proved that there was nothing inferior about Black troops. Excellent drama, top-notch battle scenes, and hardly a wasted frame of film in the whole movie.
