Veteran Moscow police officer Arkady Renko (Hurt) is investigating the deaths of several individuals found in Moscow's Gorky Park. The three corpses are without faces or fingerprints, making identification an almost impossible task. One of the victims was wearing a pair of ice skates on her feet, belonging to an actress named Irina Asanova (Pacula). Renko meets and interrogates her, eventually falling in love with Asanova as he delves deeper into the mysterious killings. He is also interested in learning more about the background of John Osbourne (Marvin), an American businessman with tremendous clout. Renko's life is a bleak and thankless one as his wife treats him like a failure, the KGB threatens him with political retribution, and he feels as if someone has him under surveillance. With the help of a forensic re-constructer, he is able to put a human face on the skeletal remains, piecing together the events of the triple homicide, and is led to the killer and an illegal sable-breeding farm.
