In this moving story, two children, Seita and Setsuko, struggle for survival when their mother is killed during the bombing of Japan in WWII. Seita takes responsibility for his younger sister and tries to build a life for the two. They strive to maintain a sense of home and family while working against sickness, hunger and an often indifferent society.

More than anything, it's a movie about love between two orphans who were left to fend for themselves amid the chaos of war. The only redemption for this sad tale is in their innocent love for one another; the persistence of innocence and human spirit in face of selfishness, greed, and violence.
