Detailed plot synopsis reviews of A Handful of Dust

Brenda Last (Kristin Scott Thomas), the wife of a rich and well-meaning country gentleman, has an affair with a smooth, handsome, and penniless young aristocrat (Rupert Graves), caring nothing about her husband. She is bored after seven years of living in the country, and Hetton, the huge, magnificent English mansion packed with servants, is no longer enough for her to be happy. She rents an apartment in London, under the pretense of studying economics, and sees her lover there. Her husband Tony (James Wilby) learns about the affair at the worst possible time: shortly after an accident that has taken a life of his son. Tony's world collapses. There comes a point where he cannot take it anymore, and he leaves, joining an expedition to the jungles of Brazil. The expedition falls apart, and Tony ends up a hostage of a mad explorer, Todd (Alec Guinness).
