Michael Caine, Mia -Hannah- Farrow's husband, has fallen in love with his wife's sister Barbara Hershey but can't find the words to leave his loving wife. Barbara will wait for a year but will finally decide to break a relation leading nowhere. Michael will stay for his own good with Hannah.

Woody Allen, the hypocondriac ex-husband of Hannah, experiences a virulent mid-life crisis after having feared he had a terminal disease.

Dianne Wiest, Hannah's second sister, is desperately looking for a goal in life and, eventually, for the right man to be with. She will find peace and inspiration by writing plays whose main characters are inspired by the people she knows.
