SPOILERS Joe plays for the Los Angeles Rams, a team heading for Super Bowl success. Following an accident in which he collides with a truck while on his bicycle, a rookie guardian angel takes Joe to heaven instead of making sure he won't survive first. Joe protests he should not be in heaven, and Mr Jordan, who seems to run things, admits that he was not due for a number of years. Unfortunately, he cannot return to his own body, as it has been cremated already. It's decided Joe will take the body of Leo Farnsworth, a man who has been murdered by Julia, his wife, and the man she's been having an affair with, called Tony. Much to Julia and Tony's astonishment, Joe returns as Farnsworth. He buys the Rams and trains to be their quarterback once more. While he's busy with this, he meets and falls in love with a woman named Betty. Murder is still on Julia's and Tony's minds and Tony shoots Farnsworth/Joe dead. A new quarterback is found, in the form of Thomas Jarrett, but he is killed while playing. Mr Jordan makes amends by assisting Joe to take the body of Jarrett, and the Rams win. Joe can no longer remember his previous life and truly becomes Jarrett, even meeting Betty again, this time as Jarrett. The audience is left to believe they will fall in love all over again.
