Theodore Twombly is a greeting-card writer who struggles with social interaction. He has sunken into introversion as a result of his pending divorce from his college girlfriend. When he sees an advertisement for a new type of operating system, with a brand new advanced style of artificial intelligence, he purchases it and sets it up. He decides on a whim to set up his OS as a female, and into his life pops Samantha. She is not what Theodore expects: she's funny, spontaneous, and curious. Samantha begins organizing his life, and they engage in a series of long and in-depth conversations about the nature of emotions, technology, and life in general. Theodore finds himself falling in love with Samantha, and, much to his surprise, Samantha begins falling in love with him as well. His new relationship gives Theodore renewed confidence to at long last finalize his divorce. However, when he tells his ex-wife that his new girlfriend is an OS, she verbally abuses him, telling Theodore that he always takes the easiest route, the route that involves avoiding human interaction. Theodore is deeply troubled by the implications, and as his relationship with Samantha begins to land on the rocks, he must decide what he really wants, and, furthermore, whether Samantha will be satisfied with him forever.
