In the weeks leading up to the race, Team Douglas has some rather exciting adventures, not the least of which is Herbie's infatuation with a beautiful powder-blue 1977 Lancia Scorpion. It turns out that the car's driver is a
beautiful young red-headed woman named Diane Darcy (Julie Sommars), who is among the contestants for the race, and the solitary female driver as well.
