Dustin Hoffman plays Bernard LaPlante, a homeless man, down on his luck. He is fired from his job and living in a homeless shelter. He is divorced from his wife and has difficulty getting time to see his son. One day he is supposed to go meet his son, but events intervene. A plane crashes and people are trapped inside. Bernard does something very uncharacteristic--he rescues the people inside. One of them is Geena Davis, who is a television reporter. She goes on a quest to find the man who saved her.

Bernard isn't interested in publicity because of his legal problems. His homeless friend John Bubber, played by Andy Garcia, decides he'll tell everyone it was him, after the TV station offers a reward of $1 million to give the channel an exclusive interview. Suddenly his life his changed in the whirl of paparazzi. In the meantime, Bernard can't stand it that Bubber is taking credit for something he didn't do. Unfortunately, he can't tell the authorities about it because he is locked up in jail for credit card fraud, something that could take him to prison for a good long time this time, since he has other prior crimes he committed.
