This period piece, set at the turn of the 20th century, depicts life among Jews from Eastern Europe who have emigrated to New York's Lower East Side. Jake has been in the country for years, earning enough money to bring over his wife and child. When they finally arrive, he is dismayed to find that his wife won't give up her old country customs, while he has turned his back on his former customs in an effort to be part of America's burgeoning melting pot. Can this marriage survive?
