After a little girl's mother commits suicide, her father moves her to a house in the country outside of a small town.

The father is worried because the girl has become shy and reclusive. He tries to find her some friends, but she tells him that she already has a new friend named Charlie. Her father thinks that Charlie is an imaginary friend, but things soon start happening. Spooky messages are written on the bathroom wall, he finds the cat killed and floating in blood in the bathtub and his new friend is mysteriously killed and he finds her in a blood-filled bathtub as well.
He thinks the little girl is to blame, so he covers up for her.
Charlie becomes increasingly violent and sets his sights on the girl. The girl makes a frightened phone call to her psychologist. It's then that the girl's father realizes that he is Charlie; or, that Charlie is his alter-ego. He remembers that he killed his wife, the cat and his new friend. Charlie takes over completely and chases the girl into a cave in the woods. He tries to kill her, but her psychologist shows up just in time kill Charlie and save the little girl.
