When young and beautiful Australian Ruth Barron (Kate Winslet) heads off to India on a spiritual journey she becomes enchanted with a religious guru. Charmed by the guru, Ruth joins his cult-like following and plans to return to India to be part of a group marriage ceremony to her guru. Desperate to get their daughter out of the clutches of the cult, Ruth's parents hire a cult deprogrammer, PJ Waters (played by Harvey Keitel), to deprogram Ruth. Ruth is taken to a remote, desert hideaway in the outback where she will be living with PJ and starting the process of deprogramming. Ruth is resentful, angry and extremely hostile to PJ. PJ, who is used to dealing with all kinds of situations, is thrown for a loop by Ruth. Never in his life has he met such a wild and unpredictable individual. Ruth is a brilliant individual, one who knows just how to manipulate and play mind games with PJ. And PJ, who is trying to break the cult's control over Ruth's mind, finds himself struggling to maintain his composure without totally going off the deep end. As Ruth and PJ battle for control and PJ begins to lose his tenuous grip on sanity, total chaos erupts in the desert as Ruth tries to escape from the hideaway.
