Two ex-members of the Foreign Legion, Barran and Propp, try to steal the content of the safe of a big corporation during the Christmas weekend. After having managed to open the safe, which was empty, they are accidentally locked up in the room. Nearly 48 hours later, almost dying of thirst, they find their way out through an air duct and understand, when they stumble upon the corpse of a security guard, that they've been mislead : someone had already stolen the money before their own arrival. Franz Propp (Bronson) is soon arrested by the police but Dino Barran (Delon) will discover that the persons to blame for the robbery are in fact the mistress and the daughter of the corporation's owner.
