Four young people are tortured and killed by a colorfully psychotic family in the creepy American South while researching the legend of Dr. Satan. Four young writers (Jerry, Bill, Mary, and Denise) are traveling the backroads of the American South, searching for eccentric roadside attractions for a book they are writing. On their journey they meet Captain Spaulding, the menacingly friendly proprietor of the Museum of Monsters and Madmen. Spaulding takes them on his guided serial killer ride where he narrates the stories of various murderers, including local legend Doctor Satan. The group leaves to search for local artifacts of the Dr. Satan story but their car suffers a breakdown. A hitchhiker named Baby takes the group to her family home. The family consists of a father and mother and their two grown children. Each is unkempt and somehow deformed. The family is celebrating the day before Halloween and treats their guests to dinner and a performance before informing the group that they should leave since their car is now repaired. Before the group can get far, the family disguises themselves and intercepts them in the night, returning them to the house and killing Bill. Law enforcement sent to find the missing young people are similarly offed. Later, the remaining prisoners are taken by the family to be thrown down a well. Mary briefly escaped but is killed by the daughter. Jerry and Denise are lowered into the well where Jerry succumbs to the cruel torture of a waiting Dr. Satan. Denise escapes and is given a ride by Captain Spaulding. She falls asleep while being driven away but wakes up on Dr. Satan's operating table.

Best part of story, including ending:
The movie felt like it was made for big slasher genre fans. I'm not one, so I didn't care for it.
Best scene in story:
Captain Spaulding's introduction is great. He is a very charismatic character and his museum is colorful and interesting.
Opinion about the main character:
The main characters are just cyphers waiting to get murdered. There is no real main character.
