Set in Washington State Post World War II, the movie opens with the mother of two fragile teenage girls committing suicide. Christine Lahatti, the girl's eccentric aunt shows up to care for them. She is unconventional, and the town recognizes that some of her actions seem insane. The more practical of the two girls goes to live with her teacher. The odder sister ends up becoming more and more like the odd aunt as the movie moves to its dream-like ending.
