When the Sultan of Zanzibar discovers that his harbour is shark infested he tries to get rid of them before Zanzibar loses trade. His advisors and court magician suggest Hippos to attack the sharks. Sending a team to retrieve twelve they set off to find some. Unfortunately for a little Hippo called Hugo, they find him and his family.

Once they arrive at Zanzibar they are put into the harbour and rid the people of Zanzibar of their shark problem. The people are grateful and rejoice, they feed and care for the Hippos. However this care and attention doesn't last long and soon the Hippos are forgotten. Starving they venture away from the harbour in search for food. They are soon deemed a nuisance and are massacred by Aban Khan and angry farmers - all except little Hugo who escapes.
Orphaned and homeless Hugo is in bad way until he meets a boy called Jorma and his luck changes.
