Because Helen and Jackson have been dating for about a year, it isn't a surprise that the couple gets married when Helen becomes pregnant. The couple are happy until Jackson's mother, Martha, comes into the picture. Martha comes to New York to ask Jackson if she can sell the farm that was left to him when his father died. But instead of selling it, Jackson and Helen decide to move into the giant farmhouse and help Martha fix it up. That's when problems start. Helen and Jackson start fighting, Martha tells lies to the townspeople, and Helen starts talking to Jackson's estranged grandmother. Helen discovers things from Jackson's grandmother that she never knew about her husband, and she finds out the truth about what happened the night his father died. And after Jackson leaves for a week to go to a horse race, Helen is left alone with Martha not just fearing for her sanity, but for her life and the life of her unborn baby.
