Cassandra, 17 years old, lives in a run-down castle with her writer father, artist stepmother, and brother and sister. Dad has had writer's block for 12 years, and the family is in desperate financial straits. When their new American landlord, Simon, comes to town, sister Rose sees a way to escape poverty and help her family. She tries to convince Simon she is in love with him, and Simon's brother tries to convince him that Rose is a golddigger. Meanwhile, Cassandra tries to cure her father's writer's block, while fighting her own growing feelings for Simon.
