Heiress Cynthia Dulaine (Sandra Dee) rushes away from her fiance's nightclub gig to catch a plane home to be with her dying grandfather, Philip Dulaine (Maurice Chevalier.) His dying wish is to meet the man she will marry, Warren Palmer (Andy Williams.) But Warren can't make it. Distraught, Cindy enlists a substitue - a visiting chemical engineer named Paul Benton (Robert Goulet,) by promising him that Dulaine Enterprises will consider his invention if he will just pretend to be Warren for a little while.

It seems like a simple plan. But Granddad doesn't die. Furthermore, he becomes fond of the phoney fiance, a handsome charmer who not only seems to truly love Cindy, but who even manages to save Dulaine Enterprises from losing a crucial bank loan.
To further complicate things, the real Warren shows up, and is not at all happy about playing the role of an outsider while his fiance keeps up appearances with this new man. While the mischievous Philip fools the three of them into thinking they are fooling him, the triangle keeps the sparks flying - in more ways than one - surviving a "cat burglar" imitation, a disastrous romantic getaway, and a hilarious melee on the mansion's front lawn. The question is, will true love prevail?
