Detailed plot synopsis reviews of I Know Where I'm Going (1947)

Joan (Wendy Hiller), a middle-class English woman from Manchester, is a calculating gold-digger who is about to marry her boss, a millionaire old enough to be her father. Needless to say, she does not love him, but it doesn't matter, she wants money and knows exactly what she is doing – or where she is going, as the movie title puts it. Having announced her engagement to her father, Joan sets out on a journey to the remote Scottish island of Kiloran, rented by her fiancé, where they are supposed to get married. The journey goes well until bad weather interferes. Joan finds herself stranded on the Isle of Mull, with just one last little boat trip separating her from her husband-to-be, but that trip cannot be taken because of the storm.

Stranded with her is Torquil MacNeil (Roger Livesey), a Scottish naval officer heading home, to Kiloran, for an eight day leave. They spend some time together exploring the place and meeting the local people, simple but honest, down-to-earth, a living proof that there is much more to life than money. Joan begins to question her own priorities and grows attached to Torquil. She sees that as a threat to her brilliant future as a millionaire's wife and flees, bribing a local young man to take her to Kiloran despite the storm. The young man has a fiancée who, together with Torquil, tries to talk Joan out of the crazy idea. When she wouldn't relent, the four of them go together and barely survive. When things settle down, Joan makes another attempt to join her rich fiancé but ends up with Torquil.
