Kathryn Hansen (Barbara Bel Geddes) reminisces about growing up in her Norwegian American family. She recalls different events that happened. The one person tying everything together was Mama (Irene Dunne). Kathryn recalls her little sister's operation, and how Mama kept her promise to visit her in the hospital, despite the no visitors for twenty-four hours rule. She remembers Papa being out of work because of the strike. Nels, the oldest son wants to go to high school, and the family figures out how they can afford it. Uncle Chris visits every once in awhile, scaring the kids with his loud voice.

There is no straightforward plot, just a slice of life. Money is a recurring theme. Everything has to come out of the little bank that they keep all their spare money in. Mama frequently reminds them that they don't want to have to go to the "real" bank. Kathryn also dreams of being a writer.
