Based on Truman Capote's 1966 best-seller, the film follows Perry Smith (Blake) and Dick Hickock (Wilson), two parolees who plan to steal $10,000 from a safe in the rural Kansas home of wealthy Herb Clutter. Only there was no safe – just $43 cash. Still, determined to “leave no witnesses,” Smith and Hickock methodically hog-tie Mr. and Mr. Clutter and their two children. Off-screen, Smith slashes Mr. Clutter's throat then shotguns the other three, murders which the film stresses neither could have committed alone.

The fugitives flee to Mexico cashing bad checks all the way, confident that they left no clues but disagreeing on which new get-rich scheme to follow. When they return to Las Vegas, they are caught and confess. John Forsythe plays the detective who uses pre-DNA blood and footprint evidences to link Hickock to the crime scene.
