This is a huge problem for Rose as Maggie has no job, no money and has absolutely nothing in common with her...apart from her shoe size! After stealing and ruining Rose's shoes and car and not to mention sleeping with her boyfriend, Maggie is once again homeless.

After finding a stack of hidden letters and birthday cards from her long lost grandmother, she decides to go and stay in Florida with her. She treats her like a personal ATM and doesn't give her much respect. But everything changes when she gets a job at the hospital and helps a blind man, who in return helps her more.

Rose joins her sister at their Grandmother's and after a shaky start, they start to realise how much they need each other.

Maggie and Rose Feller are sisters who couldn't be more different. Maggie Feller (Cameron Diaz) is a wild child who has random sex, can't hold a job, doesn't have a place to live, steals from everyone and is a big mess in general. Rose Feller (Toni Collette) on the other hand is a serious attorney with a seriously boring lifestyle. It seems that Rose is always bailing Maggie out of jams. The first scene in the movie shows Maggie in a public restroom having sex with some guy from her reunion and at the same time getting violently sick. Again Rose comes to the rescue allowing her to move in and trying to straighten her out. Although the two are at odds the actually get along fairly well. That is until Maggie ends up in bed with Rose's new boyfriend while she's at work.

Rose immediately throws Maggie out of her apartment and Maggie, with no money and no job, heads back to Dad's house to see what she can steal to get by. While going through the drawers, Maggie finds a whole stack of greeting cards that were sent by grandparents she never knew. Each of the cards has a monetary gift and she ends up with enough money to head to Florida in hopes of meeting her long lost grandparents.

Meanwhile, Rose is heartbroken over the loss of her boyfriend and her sister. She quits her attorney job and becomes a professional dog walker. In doing so, she bumps into a former male co-worker, Simon Stein (Mark Feuerstein). A romance buds and eventually they end up engaged. It seems the only unhappy spot is Maggie and where she has gone off to.

Maggie shows up at the grandparents to find that her grandfather has passed away. Her grandmother, Ella Hirsch (Shirley MacLaine) is living in a very upscale retirement community. She allows Maggie to move in while on "vacation" but eventually gets tired of Maggie's antics and tells her to get a job. This is the beginning of Maggie's enlightenment not only in her professional life but in her personal life. Maggie finds her niche and finally begins to feel good about herself.

Grandma Ella keeps asking after Rose and finally sends her a ticket to fly out. The three meet and come to terms with the suicide of the girls' mother explaining the long absence of their grandparents. Maggie finds happiness as a professional shopper and there is happy ending wedding for Rose.
