His neighbor becomes his alibi and they eventually fall in love.

The cops think the writer is the killer so he remains a suspect and is continually hounded and questioned.

Because of his outrageous behavior, the writer's girlfriend becomes more and more suspicious that he might be involved in the girl's death. She agrees to marry him, but her fear of him continues to grow and she makes plans to run away.
The writer eventually finds out about her doubts and her plans to leave and tears them apart.

Just as he's walking out her door for the last time, the police call, a little too late, to tell the woman that they've caught the girl's killer and that the writer is off the hook.
