Alec Walker (Grant) meets Julie Eden (Lombard) and her daughter Ellen and they hit it off instantly. The only problem is, Alec is married. However, it is a loveless marriage. His wife, Maida (Francis) has only married him for his money. Knowing his marriage is a sham, he says he is going to keep seeing Julie as much as he wants. However, he falls in love with Julie and asks Maida for a divorce. Maida agrees, but it is just a lie. She is determined to stay with him in order to keep his money. Meanwhile, Julie's sister lost her husband to another woman and she's disgusted that Julie is breaking up another woman's family. Realizing the situation is hopeless, Julie decides to leave Alec. Completely despondent, Alec gets drunk and then catches deadly pneumonia.
