A French woman is owner of gum plantation in Indochina (present day Vietnam) and lives there with her adopted Asian daughter. Things go awry when her daughter falls in love with her mother's ex-lover and runs away with him. What she finds is not only love, but the harsh realities of life beyond the plantation's gates and brewing communist uprisings.
