Iris Movie Review Summary

Actors: Judi Dench, Jim Broadbent, Kate Winslet

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Iris

The movie is about author Iris Murdoch's struggle with Alzheimer's and how her husband, John, is her one steady companion through the ordeal. The present-day story is intercut with flashbacks from the past, depicting a young Iris - played by Kate Winslet - and her developing relationship with John, a bumbling, loving and good-natured English Literature professor. The movie also touches upon Murdoch's writing and her philosophy of life.

There are several very beautiful/poetic scenes in this movie, but on the whole it was a little lackluster. Iris Murdoch was a vibrant, brilliant woman who loved life, but the movie - even in those parts showing the younger Iris - sort of lags. The movie did not tap into the author's spirit well enough.
