Charlie Lang (Nicholas Cage) is an honest, kind-hearted New York cop locked in an unhappy marriage with his shrewish wife Muriel (Rosie Perez). Five hours later, Charlie and Muriel learn their ticket has just won them four million dollars.

The next day, Charlie visits Yvonne wondering if he should tell her about his win. When Yvonne confesses that she recently filed bankruptcy, however, Charlie doesn't have to heart to lie to her. He promises Yvonne two million dollars -- much to Muriel's horror. The promise holds though, and Yvonne goes down in history as the first waitress to earn a two million dollar tip.
As the millionaires adjust to their new lives, Charlie's wife goes on a crazy spending spree while Charlie and Yvonne spend their free time together performing good deeds for others -- and eventually fall in love. Unfortunately when Muriel finds out, she divorces Charlie, taking not only her share of the lottery winnings but Yvonne's as well. Now Charlie and Yvonne start wondering if they can hold onto their love as tabloid newspapers and unscrupulous lawyers tear their lives apart.
