It is modern day Los Angeles and someone knows a lot about the infamous criminal Jack the Ripper. That someone is killing prostitutes just like he did, beginning the killings on the day Jack's first body was found, killing the girls in the same manner, and on the same day. James Spader plays a young resident doctor, taking his training in a clinic. A young woman comes into the clinic who has been raped. The clinic leader is unsympathetic to her. John Wesford (Spader) goes to visit her, aware that she is a prostitute, she's pregnant, and according to history, the next victim will be a pregnant prostitute. He visits and then goes back later to discover her dead. Unfortunately the police catch him there and witnesses see him, so the police think they have caught their killer. Later the actual killer (?) kills the Wesford character because Wesfor saw him at the scene. Police believe he killed himself in despondence. Them comes in Richard Wesford (Spader), John's twin brother. He knows his brother wouldn't have killed himself. He sets out to prove that he didn't and to discover who the real killer is. Cynthia Gibb plays John's colleague at the clinic who helps Richard discover the killer.
