Although desperate for a better life, Jason has difficulty severing the ties with his criminal minded brother. In flashback sequences the viewer is allowed to see the two brothers' dysfunctional upbringing and the way in which their father, Mad Dog (Forest Whitaker), affected them with his erratic behavior, drinking and brutality. As the drama escalates and Josh becomes embroiled in a bank heist scheme with Lyric's violent brother, Lyric begs Jason to leave town with her. Meanwhile, Josh has become very jealous of Lyric and her strong place in Jason's life. Although Jason wants a life with Lyric away from the turbulence of his current existence, he has difficulty relinquishing his role as Josh's brother.
