Kelly (Clint Eastwood) is a disgraced former officer stuck on the front lines of France in World War II. He stumbles across German intelligence that points the way to a large hoard of Nazi treasure and within moments he schemes to capture the loot for himself. Kelly assembles a ragtag team of soldiers from his squad, including his commander Big Joe (Telly Savalas) and others including a tank unit led by a Beatnik (Donald Sutherland as 'Oddball'), a greedy supply officer, and a marching band. This is a dangerous mission for Kelly and his band as they are bombed by Allied planes, blast through an enemy tank camp, and get caught in a mine field. Along the way Kelly and his heroes cut through the German army and advance the front which very much pleases the enthusiastic general (Carrol O'Connor) who labels this band of theives 'heroes'.

Kelly's heroes is the hard punching story of a group of Americans fighting a bitter war in NW europe against the Nazis, who stumble on the chance to steal (using their unique skills) a hoard of looted gold and escape from the war to Switzerland.

Set in WW2, Sgt. Kelly (Clint Eastwood) rounds up a colorful gang of soldiers, including a pre-hippie Sherman tank squad to pursuit a bank loaded with German gold behind enemy lines.

A platoon of American WWII soldiers feel like they've been getting the short end of the stick all war long, so they team up with a hustler and an "Odball" tank commander to go deep behind enemy lines and steal a heap of Nazi gold. Very funy, anti-heroic war movie from 1970, complete with tough sergeant, fast-talking business hustler, aggressive general, lots of tank action, and an anachronistic hippie tank commander.
