Peter Sanderson is currently taking part in an important chess tournament. When his girlfriend is found dead, apparently killed by a psychopath, Peter must answer the questions of the local police and the psychologist assigned to the case. The killer will then contact Peter by phone everyday and give him clues that could help him prevent the next scheduled murder. After four murders, Peter understands that his adversary is playing a chess game with him but the police is more and more convinced that Peter could be the man they are all looking for.
