In 1765 France, a beast is savaging the countryside. A royal botanist with an adventurous background, skill in taxedermy and martial arts, and Iroquois "brother" is sent to investigate as the local nobility attempts to hunt it down. The botanist introduces the insular, old-world, rural nobility to some of the new discoveries and attitudes of the age, awakens the love of a young noblewoman, and gets involved in both political and religeous intrigue. Sumptouous sets and costumes, "cutting edge" action sequernces, and images and plot developments that get more outrageous by the minute make this film unique. General opinions are split over whether this is a work of genius or a horrible mess.
