Tom Logan (Robert Redford), the Assistant District Attorney in New York City, is asked by lawyer Laura Kelly (Debra Winger) to help her in the case of Chelsea Deardon (Daryl Hannah), who is being accused of stealing a painting from an art dealer named Victor Taft (Terence Stamp). Chelsea claims that the painting was given to her by her father. Taft suddenly drops the lawsuit against her, as police detective Cavanaugh (Brian Dennehy) presents evidence that her father's paintings, that were supposedly lost in a fire, are still around. While Logan tries to protect Chelsea, Kelly further investigates the issues surrounding these paintings, which prove to play a vital role for the pending lawsuit. She finds out about a big insurance fraud between Taft, Deardon and a man named Joe Brock. Cavanaugh, who turns out to be Brock, tries to get his hands on the painting Chelsea was accused of stealing. Logan, Kelly and Chelsey successfully prevent that from happening, Chelsea is exonerated and Logan decides to start a legal practice with Kelly instead of going back to the district attorney's office.
