(Based on the book by Bret Easton Ellis) Clay Easton (McCarthy) is an 18 year old freshman who comes back home from his first semester at a New Hampshire college to spend his Christmas vacation with his wealthy but emotionally distant family in Los Angeles. Once home he meets up with his former girlfriend Blair (Gertz) whom he is still very much in love with. There is some tension between them at first due to the fact that Clay caught Blair in bed with his best friend Julian Wells (Downey Jr.) at Thanksgiving. Blair tells Clay that she's worried about Julian because he is using a lot of cocaine, has become estranged from his father and brother, and owes a lot of money to a drug dealer named Rip (Spader). What follows is parties every night, the reigniting of the flame between Clay and Blair and Clay's attempts to help Julian with his mounting problems. After attempting to reason with Rip and getting nowhere, Clay goes to his father for money in a last ditch effort to rescue Julian.
