Three young medical students - John Kendrick, Louise Stone, and Cornish - look forward to a career researching ways to bring recently dead bodies back to life. Kendrick, however, decides to pursue this at a commercial firm, and is angry when his colleagues decline to join him. At first he is wealthy and successful, but the firm cancels his expensive project. He quits and works alone, becoming a laughing stock and falling into poverty. After his wife dies, his young son is assigned to juvenile hall until he can find a means of support. The boy escapes and begs him to find work, but he refuses to to do anything but his research, and even rejects Stones' offer to help.

But when the boy's dog is put to sleep by the dog catcher, Kendrick finally swallows his pride and takes it to Cornish, who is just about to try his experiment. Cornish's experiment, with some help from Kendrick, is a success. Kendrick wins back the respect of his peers and the love of his son.

In the 1935 film Life Returns, three university students discuss the possibility of a life restoration formula for the betterment of humankind. Kendrick (Onslow Stevens) finds all three jobs at Arnold Research Laboratory. The others are dismayed by the prospect of commercial research and decline the positions in favor of something more noble. As years pass Kendrick labors unassisted in his quest at Arnold Lab, gets married, and they have a son.

Eventually, Mr. Arnold, the boss, reprimands Kendrick for a lack of tangible results and reassigns him to something more lucrative for the company. Kendrick practices medicine on the side, his wife passes away and his son Danny has become a juvenile delinquent. Danny and his dog Scooter run away from home. The dog is caught by the dogcatcher and is scheduled for euthanasia. Danny, who believes his father to be a genius, pleads with dad for help when Scooter is put to sleep. Dad is reluctant before finally recovering Scooters body. He uses his untried formula on Scooter to bring him back to life. Kendrick regains Danny's love and respect.
