Sara Crewe is the wealthy daughter of a British soldier living in India. She is sent to boarding school in England, and is an excellent student, befriending unpopular students and the ill-used scullery maid. Then, her father dies, and Sara must become a servant at the school to settle her father's debts. She struggles to survive and maintain her dignity, while, unknown to her, her father's best friend searches for her.

In "A Little Princess" Sara finds out that society is unfair and unjust. But she is nice to everyone - she befriends the rat she has to share her room with, as well as the poor black girl (I think in the original book she was Irish) at the school. But she perseveres, and luckily in the end she finds out she has money and a father, so she gets to benefit from the class system after all.

An unusual amalgamation of a child's imagination and outward reality. Sara, an unrelenting orphan deeply rooted in her father's love, maintains hope amidst the report of his death and the effect of those reports on her world. Nearly crushed she is lifted up by the same hand she offered to others.
