Emily Friehl and Oliver Martin's first meeting is very hot: they make love in the Los Angeles - NYC airplane. They spend then a couple of hours in New-York and Oliver explains to Emily that he has a plan for his own life : to work, be successful and then to marry and have children. He asks Emily to call him in seven years to check he's right.

Four years later, on New Year's Eve and after having been dumped by his most recent boy-friend, Emily calls Martin, spends the evening with him but, in the morning, both separate once again. Three years later, it's Oliver's turn to be dumped by his girl-friend. He calls Emily and they spend together the night in the desert, making love and photos. Oliver, on the verge to get a huge financing for his newly created society, must go to NYC and then come back to San Francisco. He doesn't want to start a steady relation with Emily who has her own job in Los Angeles. One year later, Oliver's society has gone bankrupt. He comes back to L.A. with the intention of seeing and marrying Emily but she's engaged. Six months later, Emily breaks up with her fiancÚ and desperately tries, once again, to locate Oliver.
