There are two main plots in this rather depressing movie. The first one involves the efforts of detective Madigan to catch the criminal Benesch who's managed to steal Madigan's gun during his failed arrest. Madigan is given 72 hours by the Police Commissioner Henry Fonda to find his gun and Benesch back. The second plot describes a few hours of Fonda's activity in his job. He will have to choose between friensdhip and ethics when he learns that his old friend James Whitmore, the chief inspector, may have protected an illegal activity. He will also have to listen to the reverend Taylor's complaints about the violent arrest of his son by the police forces.
