Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Magnificent Obsession

Bob Merrick (Hudson) seems a hopelessly spoiled, horribly selfish man. This is cemented when he foolishly wrecks his speed boat in the lake. The only available aid and equipment in the community is sent to help him. As he is being helped, Dr. Wayne Phillips, a respected local doctor, is simultaneously dying. Aid fails to reach him in time. Merrick learns that Phillips had selflessly helped many people in secret, expecting nothing in return. Merrick tries to emulate this and bungles badly, leaving an even bigger mess, this time involving Phillips' widow, Helen (Wyman), with whom he has become smitten. To attempt to redeem himself and enter her good graces, Merrick enters medical school. But he may not yet have been sufficiently tested to determine if he is truly a changed man.
