The setting is 1930's Canada. Avik, an Innuit boy, is befriended by Albertine, a girl who is half-Eskimo, half-French Canadian. They seem destined for one another but are soon separated.

Years go by, but Avik never forgets his love buddy. During World War II, he becomes a bomber pilot and runs into Albertine on the front, where they rekindle their love for one another. However, differences in ethnicity (Albertine can pass for white) and social status are roadblocks to their continued romance.
